HIV Scenario in Orissa

!9# HIV Scenario in Orissa

It's time to wear Red Ribbon

When her husband died last month, Jayanti (name changed) came to know that he was suffering from AIDS. Tests revealed that 30-year-old Jayanti and her three-month-old son, along with two other minor children were also HIV positive. The news spread across the village. Her family was ostracised by the society, even doctors refused to attend her only because she was HIV positive. Ostracism, humiliation and mistreatment at the hands of family members, community and the medical fraternity are increasing in Orissa. The lack of adequate medical care, treatment facilities and socio-economic support from families and the community has driven many patients to despair and suicide.

According to the UNAIDS report, 285 people have died of AIDS during the 2000-2005 period but activists say it is very difficult to get an accurate figure of AIDS-related deaths because AIDS is rarely given as the cause of death - unofficial estimates suggest a figure of 300 persons. Out of 21, 623 blood samples, 2306 cases refered to HIV positive and 467 cases were having AIDS virus. Among these cases, 68 per cent males and 32 per cent females are there. When we consider age group wise, the age group (25-39) years has maximum number of cases. Ganjam district is witnessing an alarmingly rise in AIDS incidences and is likely to earn the dubious distinction of having the highest number HIV cases among all the districts in Orissa within the next few years. According this report. AIDS had already claimed 151 lives in the district between 2000 and 2005, while the HIV positive cases rose to 960 during the same period. A report reveals that 11,357 persons visited the voluntary and confidential counseling and testing centres in medical hospitals in Berhampur during this period. Most HIV cases were reported from Polosara, Hinjili Digapahandi and Belguntha blocks.

Migration, low literacy, poverty, urbanisation, injectable drug users, unsafe sex practices and ignorance about the transmission of the disease are major factors for the spread of the killer disease. Migration is the major culprit for the rising figures of HIV cases. Unofficial sources say that of the 10,00,000 Oriya migrant workers in different parts of the country. The situation worsened due to the colossal damage caused by the super cyclone in 1999 and the subsequent severe drought of 2000 followed by unprecedented floods. One of the major destinations of migration is Surat. From 1975 onwards migration started towards Surat. The migrants work in textile industries and few also work in diamond polishing industries. From every corner of the state, people are migrating to Surat. Ganjam district is at the first place in the row. There are more than 600,000 Oriya migrant labourers working in Surat from Ganjam district alone out of 900,000 labourers from the state. At least 30 per cent of them are seasonal migrants and the others live in the slums of Surat around the year, in conditions that carry high risks of unsafe sex leading to HIV transmission. The medical community of Orissa confirms the alarming increase in AIDS among migrant labourers. Brothels flourish as much as jobs and this is one reason why Surat is a sitting duck for an AIDS bomb. Surat is the only city in Gujarat with an organised "red-light" area. Large-scale proliferation of premarital promiscuity, multiple sexual partnership with commercial sex workers and high homosexuality are part of labour life here. The commercial sex workers are the AIDS carriers in Surat. The menace of AIDS is graver than usually understood since migrant workers return to their native places taking the risk across several hundred kilometres to their families.

Age Group Male Female

0-14 75 63

15-24 102 172

25-39 1079 441

40+ 310 46

If you study the above graph, the maximum number of HIV +ve cases found in the (25-39) year age group and this group is known as the major workforce of a family or a community. At the same time, they are the earning power of their family. Because of less opportunity, they are migrating to different parts of the country in search of job and come back carrying HIV virus. He is the parent bearer of the virus and his wife will be the first victim. And the trend goes like this. The next target will be the newborn baby. The small kids with the age group (0-14) years are innocents and unaware of the dreaded disease. The disease is blessed from their parents. In every age group, one can find that the infected male number is more than the female counter part. But in the age group (15-19) years, you can find a peculiar change. Here the number of females having HIV +ve is 172 as contrast to 102 males. The reason is more female in this age group are married and the virus is memorable gift from their husband. In the age group more than 40 years, 310 males and 46 females are infected with HIV positive virus. Now time has come to think on this rising figures of HIV positive cases. The disease really created a terror in every village of Orissa. If anyone is suffering from fever or cold, then the villager starts to draw a map where he was working through out his labour career. Any time in his struggle to fulfill the daily essential needs, he may migrate to other states and other parts of the state. If the patient has gone anywhere from his village, then without second thought they diagnose the case as AIDS. Then the count down starts, before any concrete report from the medical official, the villagers kill him by imposing unnecessary restrictions. The main issue is not to love or hate the people who are affected by the dreaded disease but to prevent the virus before it added some more victims to his group.

To prevent the HIV/AIDS in the country, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare constituted a National AIDS Committee in Year 1986, under the chairmanship of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with representatives from various sectors. The committee was formed with a view to bring together various ministries, non-Government organisations and private institutions for effective co-ordination in implementing the programme. In order to strengthen the programme management, the State Government has established its own managerial organisations which include Orissa State AIDS Control Society, technical advisory committee and empowered committee as per the guidelines of the strategic plan.

Orissa State AIDS Control Society (OSACS) has undertaken targeted intervention programmes in the state for highly vulnerable populations. Targeted intervention projects are now being run by the NGOs in several districts for commercial sex workers, truckers, migrant labourers, fisher folk community, jail inmates and slum women labour force. But lack of awareness among sexually active youths regarding the disease is the major roadblock against its spread. Reports have often attributed illiteracy and ignorance to the spurt in AIDS cases.

Learn How to DJ - How to DJ Mix Like a Pro!

DJing has become a musical art form in its own right. If you want to learn how to DJ professionally there is a lot to learn and you will want to refer to some of the resources mentioned later in this article. However if you just want to learn the basics of spinning and mixing your own tunes then this article will get you on your way to learn how to DJ mix like a Pro.

Lets begin with the definition of a DJ or "Disk Jockey". The original meaning of DJ is someone who selects music and plays it for an audience. The DJ may perform on the radio, on TV, at a party, at a Rave, in a club or today even in a stadium setting with thousands of fans watching. Originally this was done with vinyl records on a turntable but today it is done with all sorts of media either alone or in various combinations including:
Vinyl Records on multiple turntables CD players MP3 players iPod/iphone Laptop computers controlling DJ mixing Software

How to DJ Mix:

A typical DJ setup today consists two sound sources such as two turntables and a mixer. The DJ can monitor one record on a headphone while the other record is playing so he/she can set it up to begin playing at a specific point when the other record stops.

The mixer has a fader switch that allows the DJ to smoothly transition between the two decks and to control the various sound elements such as volume, EQ, Bass,Treble etc. A basic system will just have a simple mixer and two "Platters" as the record turntables are known.

CD based systems will have a pair of CD Decks instead of turntables and a mixer. In addition these units typically have whats called a "Jog wheel" that emulates a vinyl record deck. This can be used to control the music and can be run forward and backward to get a "scratching" effect. With the advent of MP3 players and the iPod music player it is common to see these music sources included in the mixer units.

An ipod dock is becoming commonly available in many models of dj equipment. Typically there would be two decks a mixer and an iPod deck allowing the DJ to play tunes from the ipod & the decks or to record his performances to the ipod itself.

Learn How to DJ:

More sophisticated DJ units known as "software controllers" connect to a laptop computer via a fast USB MIDI interface that is running specialized DJ software. The music is stored on the laptop & the controls on the mixer/deck unit control the software & thus the music. These units typically have "platters" with actual vinyl records that give the DJ the tactile feel of a vinyl record with the advantages of digital control. There are many manufacturers of complete DJ Systems. One of my favorites is Numark. They provide a full range of different types of DJ equipment. Some of the common techniques & terminology used by the DJ include:
Scratching Cueing Looping Virtual needle drops BPM Beat Matching

There are a number of DJ software packages available that can be used by a variety of different DJ systems. They include:
Serato Itch Serato Scratch Live Numark Cue Virtual DJ Traktor Mix meister

I have provided a link below that will show you the different types of DJ equipment available. The cost of DJ equipment varies greatly depending on the type and quality you are after, it can range anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple thousand dollars. You can learn how to DJ mix like a pro.

Traktor Kontrol S4 Review - Digital DJ Equipment

!9# Traktor Kontrol S4 Review - Digital DJ Equipment

I cut through the hype to show you what's really important. For me, this boils down to user experience and sound quality. These are what sets good controllers apart from average ones.

I prefer seeing the production model tested by real pro DJs first before giving an opinion.

The Traktor Kontrol S4 by Native Instruments is similar in that it's also a fully integrated hardware and DJ software solution.

It's a great size for a DJ controller. Not too big to transport easily (unlike the Numark NS7) and big enough to look cool.

It also appears to be scalable enough for both beginner and pro DJs to use with confidence.

What advantage for you? Stability my friend. The last thing you want is for your DJ mixing software to get stuck in a set and embarrass you, leaving you red faced and having to reboot everything. With everyone laughing and pointing at you.

Traktor Kontrol S4 review - 4 decks to mix with & 4 channel mixer

Many of you won't mix using 4 decks to start with, but after a while you'll start to see why having 4 different audio sources can be interesting. Using 4 decks isn't for a casual DJ who plays out once a month and rarely practices. It's for the guys and girls who want to add some creativity, splice new sounds into their mixes, mix 3 or 4 tunes together (yes people can do it) and basically let rip on the sounds.

I do like their 4 channel mixer function. That is Kool & the Gang! Good, sturdy knobs and buttons give you close control.

Having 4 audio sources also is great for when a new DJ has to hit the decks running with no dip in the beat.

Imagine you play for 1 hour, everbody's dancing, then another DJ comes on, or your buddy. You have to keep them on the floor!

He or she can seamlessly plug their audio source into the Traktor Kontrol S4 and play away without either of you sweating!

Just the dancefloor will sweat. You'll head off and get a nice cold beer of course, happy with your set.

Traktor Kontrol S4 review - the verdict

Pros This controller is great. For me, it's the fact that the DJ will enjoy him or herself and not get stressed and lost with the controls.

Having the 4 channel mixer is a massive plus.

I do think having a 24 bit sound card is a must and you should only be considering digital gear which has at least that.

It also looks extremely cool.

Cons

No scratching

I think that if you're a turntablists, you should consider using Serato as Traktor seem to be less adapted for turntablism.

Price isn't for everybody

The price is not low, but gets you good, high end material with reliable software that'll last you for the next 5 years at least, and probably more.

Have a look at it, see the user reviews and decide for yourself if it's really for you.

Mobile DJ in the 21st Century

!9# Mobile DJ in the 21st Century

[if http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5050/5378445932_de79edba57_m.jpg]
[endif]

A Mobile DJ is an entertainer that travels to locations to provide entertainment for a specific event. Where will you see a Mobile DJ? You'll see a Mobile DJ providing entertainment for Birthday Parties, Sweet 16's, Bar-Bat Mitzvahs, Weddings, Class Reunions, Graduation Parties, Corporate Parties, etc.

Mobile DJ's (somewhat of an oxymoron before the turn of the 21st century) weren't so mobile. You would see 2 large turntables, a big mixer, big amplifier, big speakers, huge heavy crates full of 78's, lots of wires, and just too much stuff and not easily mobile. Although Big Club DJ's and some "old school" DJ's still love spinning on turntables, it's just not efficient for a typical Event DJ. As technology gets smaller and more efficient, DJ'ing equipment is becoming much easier to transport, set-up, and operate.

The DJ's that use the larger turntable systems look and sound amazing while beat mixing but you won't see many of them DJ'ing smaller events that may just require some background music. A kid with an iPod, with a good playlist, and speakers can probably provide decent songs while a big turntable mixing system is just overkill. A good mobile DJ with the right equipment can be very profitable and successful at these events and can even begin building a reputable DJ business. As the business builds, and gigs begin to accumulate, it's important to have DJ equipment that is reliable, easy to set-up, and effective.

When looking for reliable equipment as a Mobile DJ, it's important to look for "name" brands. Even with name brands, a DJ has a choice between lower quality-lower prices, higher-quality, higher-prices. For MP3 and CD Players, names like Gemini and American Audio are cheaper "name" brands but they are lower in quality than Denon or Pioneer. Numark, previously a mid-level quality company has been reaching new technology (check out Newmarks, NS7FX) that is beginning to compete with the big boys.

Here are some of the most popular Dual CD/MP3 Players with example-averaged prices being used by DJ's: Gemini CDMP-6000 (9.95), Gemini CDX-2400 Rackmount (0.00), American Audio CK 1000 Table Top Dual (9.00), American Audio Velocity Professional Dual (9.00), Numark CD Mix-1 Dual (199.00), Numark CDN22 Rack Mount Dual CD Player (149.00), Denon DN-D6000 Dual CD MP3 Player (0.00), Pioneer CMX-3000 Dual Rackmount CD Player (,000).

You can obviously see a price difference but you will experience a noticeable difference in quality between a cd controller selling for 0 as opposed to the Pioneer CMX for a grand.

Some Mobile DJ's have even decided to make their set-up even more mobile by doing away with CD's and purchasing MP3 Players that have external hard drive or iPod connections. I run all my parties with MP3's no CD's. Although I have a Denon 4500 CD player in my system, it is only used if someone has cd they want me to play.

Here are some of the most popular MP3 players with example averaged prices. Numark's IDJ Mixing Console for iPod (0.00), Numark's IDJ2 DJ Console for the IPod and External Hard Drive connections (9.00), Numark's D2 Director Mass Storage Player and Manager, Denon DN-HD2500 Hard Disk Media (9.00), Pioneer MEP-7000 Professional Media Player with CD Decks (00)

Some of these units can be used as controllers for popular Laptop Mixing Software like Traktor, Virtual DJ, PCDC, and Serato Scratch. There are popular controllers like the Vestax VCI-100MV Mixvibes Edition DJ Controller that is specifically designed to control laptop software. Numark's NS7 DJ (00.00) is getting some big attention from Serato users.

If DJ'ing on a laptop, consider using that laptop solely for DJ'ing. Other programs or files on the laptop can slow the necessary processing speed.

Once a Mobile DJ has a player, now a good mixer has to be considered. Again, there are good name brands with lower quality-lower prices and good name brands with higher quality-higher prices. Behringer is a dependable brand on the lower end. Consider the Behringer DX626 Pro Mixer (0.00), Vestax PMC-280 4 Channel DJ Mixer With Digital Effects (9.00), Denon DN-X1100 4 Channel DJ Mixer (0.00), or the Pioneer DJM-800 Professional Mixer (,700.00). A Mobile DJ can't go wrong with any of these selections but the pricier mixers do offer more features like effects, more mic inputs, talk over, etc.

Once a Player is selected, and a Mixer is selected, all that's left are some good powerful speakers. The best type of speakers a mobile DJ can use is Active/Powered Speakers. Passive speakers would require an amplifier or a powered mixer with more weight added to the rig. A DJ can run an XLR cable out of the mixers, plug directly into the powered speakers, plug the speakers in, and voile, sound! '

There are a few decent companies that I could suggest. Here are a few products: Behringer Eurolive B208D Active PA (0.00), American Audio XSP-10A Powered Speaker (0.00). Here are the companies that I highly recommend: Mackie, JBL, and RCF. Mackie SRM450 v2 Active PA (0.00), Mackie SRM350 v2 Active, JBL EON515 450 Watt 15" Powered (0.00), JBL PRX535 3 Way 15" (00.00), RCF ART312A or RCFART315A Powered Speakers 15" (00.00).

A Mobile DJ should have a pretty simple Set-up. At this point we have discussed a Media Player (CD/MP3 or only MP3), Mixer, and Powered Speakers. This is all the equipment that is necessary for Mobile DJ.

A good case with a sturdy rack should be considered as well (0-0). The Player and Mixer will be screwed down on the top, and in the front of the rack you'll have the dual cd decks (if a cd player is purchased) and a power strip to plug everything in. Now the rig is; 2 speakers, the case with all the components all safe and secured, a bag with wires (xlr cables, rca cables, etc.), and speaker poles.

Now all you'll need is music and set lists. Besides learning how the equipment works, this is the hardest part of DJ'ing. Good set lists and great music is what separates good DJs from bad DJs no matter how expensive or elaborate their equipment is. Djs who have been entertaining for a long time have learned from experience what songs work for specific sets.

Where do new DJs or Intermediate DJs go to learn set-mixes that work? A website has been developed for Event/Mobile DJs to give DJs immediate access to Set lists for all types of parties; Weddings, Birthdays, Kids, Sweet 16's, Graduations, and great mixes for popular dance music, updated monthly. It can also be a resource site for DJ's to go and get all types of helpful tips, how-to's, and information, song programming techniques, and event forms.

Being a mobile DJ is fun, exciting, and very profitable! As technology gets smaller and easier to use, more and more people will be trying to master DJ'ing. Technology is only half of the skill. The other half of being a great Mobile DJ is knowing your music and being confident in your set lists. Having Good Equipment and Great Mixes is all a DJ needs to be great in the 21st century.

The pulse resolution of the JOG wheel and pitch control fader is 4 times higher than the VCI-100 and provides precise control of each function. The pitch control fader also shares the same high quality fader parts of the input fader for advanced operability.

Superb Audio
The built-in audio interface carries a Audio Codec IC with crystal-clear sound, generated by a delta-sigma modulation 24 bit stereo D/A-A/D converter. Audio connection includes 1 stereo input, 1 MIC input and 2 stereo output (Master L/R, Monitor L/R).

Digital Vinyl Systems - How they work?

!9# Digital Vinyl Systems - How they work?

[if http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2218/5733388351_8271323538_m.jpg]

Digital Vinyl Systems (DVS) have been developed to allow DJs to physically manipulate the playback of a digital audio file on a computer with a CD turntable as an interface standard or bridges. Digital vinyl systems keep the hands-on feel of real vinyl allow playback of digital music that is not available on vinyl. They allow DJs to scratch and other tricks that would not be possible with a keyboard or mouse.

DVS systems use special time-codeVinyl or CD control. The audio output from the time-code disc is the first (usually contain as part of the package design-DVS) A2D-one audio interface, which sends a digital signal transmitted time code to the software. The software converts the signal into corresponding changes of position and the playback speed of the digital file. The audio output of the software is then routed through the audio interface or sound card in your computer and then to a mixer, where it can be mixed in the same manner asany other audio signal.

The length of the delay time between the reading signal and encode the audio playback is a measure of the performance of a digital vinyl. A typical delay is usually in the range from 6 to 30 milliseconds.

The most popular packages are now on the market DVS Serato Scratch Live (SSL) and Native Instruments Traktor Scratch Pro Scratch LIVE is the most popular in the U.S., whereas Traktor is more popular in Europe.

There have been someControversy over who invented the concept of digital vinyl. The first digital vinyl was FinalScratch for BeOS. This system was developed in 1997/1998 by an Amsterdam-based company called N2IT, with contributions from DJ Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva. However, hip-hop star RZA from the Wu Tang Clan, in an interview with KotoriMag.com that in fact he was there, the digital-vinyl-concept, the year before requesting N2IT invented, with space-age NASA technology and millionsDollars of his own pocket.

Beginning next year, 2011, it was announced that the DMC DJ World Championships is now with Serato Scratch Live and traditional vinyl.
